Diseases associated with asbestos exposure:
- Asbestosis is a scarring of the lung. The scarring impairs the elasticity of the lung tissue and hampers its ability to exchange gasses. This then causes lack of oxygen in the blood, restricts breathing leading to decreased lung volume and increases the resistance in the airways. It’s a slowly progressive disease with latency period of 10-20 years. The disease is irreversible.
- Lung Cancer is a malignant tumor of the bronchi covering. The tumor grows through surrounding tissue invading and often obstructing the air passages. The time between exposure to asbestos and the occurrence of lung cancer is typically 20 years. Moreover, there is no threshold or limit of exposure below which the risk of lung cancer is not increased.
- Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, the lining of the chest or lining of the abdominal wall. It is considered to be a marker disease for asbestos exposure. Early stages have few symptoms. By the time it is diagnosed, sadly, it is almost always fatal. There is also no exposure threshold for it. There is no therapy that is effective for it. Like most asbestos-related diseases, Mesothelioma has an extended latency period of 20-40 years.
- Numerous other diseases and adverse health effects have been noted among those exposed to asbestos.
